Standup Against Bullying

Today is second annual Pink Shirt Day, in support for stopping bullying at schools, workplace and on the internet. Alas I didn’t wear my pink shirt (as I wore it on Monday instead), I did wear my pink tie to show my support.

Bullying is not only in schools, but in some workplaces.

I recall oh too well my high school days when I was bullied. I know how hard and how it feels to be on the receiving end of it. Granted now I feel it is a lot more different and harder on individuals who are bullied. With the internet, it is so easy to have your name out there and thrown into situations which would cause you to feel threaten and ridiculed.  I don’t know how my young niece and nephews handle the situation now-a-days.

I eventually stood up to my bully and I was able to get past it. You will not get along with everyone, and not everyone will like you, and I’m ok with that. We just have to stop the bullying and learn to celebrate the differences us human have. For it is these differences that make the world a truly wonderful place.

Illuminate Yaletown – 2009

Illuminate Yaletown happened over this past weekend with what looks like to be a great success.

What is Illuminate Yaletown you might ask?

On Saturday, February 21st, 2009, light art will illuminate yaletown. As the only outdoor event to take place in Vancouver at this time of year, this event will bring light to a gloomy night. Featuring light installations developed by artists and architects, cutting edge music and interactive activities, illuminate yaletown will allow attendees to see Vancouver as it has never been experienced before.

This will be the first annual illuminate yaletown, developed to showcase creative talent and brighten up a gloomy winter evening. Put this event on your 2009 calendar – it will be a night to remember and a favourite of Vancouverites for years to come. See you there!

I participated by walking along the streets of Yaletown and enjoying the lights that were reflecting off buildings, enjoying the lights reflecting off ice sculptures as well as being entertained by some great funky music.

Impressions on my First Northern Voice

As many of you might know, Northern Voice is Canada’s largest blogger convention.

I have heard of Northern Voice from some of my online friends from the past, and they have always told me how great it was. As blogging is becoming more and more mainstream, I thought I should attend it for the very first time.

There have been some great sessions today so far from the 2 great keynote speeches from Nora Young’s talk about “Buried Hatchets and Better Tomorrows” to Rob Cottingham’s great funny talk on “Teh Funny“.

I hope to report more details as the day progresses, but I have to say it has been a great event so far and I’m enjoying myself hanging out with like minded individuals and learning new “tricks of the trade”.

Buenos Aires – Recoleta

Buenos Aires, like many major cities worldwide, is divided up into many neighbourhoods or “barrios”. On our recent trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Russ and I got to explore some of these neighbourhoods and I will create a short series on them.

Recoleta is known for its expensive shops, cafes and parks and the famous Recoleta Cemetery, where several famous Argentine’s are buried, including Evita Peron.  The cemetery centres infront of a square where many local restaurants and night clubs are situated. The cemetery “was designed by Prospero Catelin of France, following a proposal by Bernardino Rivadavia, and opened in 1822 as a public cemetery for ordinary citizens.” [wiki]

Recoleta is also known as one of the most expensive neighbourhoods to live in, with the cost of real-estate, pricey restaurants and fashion designer adding to the cost of living. This is also the neighbourhood where I was born. Alas I can’t recall the name of the hospital my mother told me I was born in.

As most neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, Recoleta’s streets are lined with trees and every few blocks you are greeted with a park with huge full grown trees and you are always treated to a sculpture of some sort. One of the most famous sculptures is the Floralis Genérica, located in United Nations Park in Recoleta. This was created by Eduardo Catalano and is a metallic flower who’s petals open and close based on the incidence of solar rays.

The buildings rage from french style in architecture to more modern buildings.

We were lucky to have this as our base camp when we were in the city. Our hotel, Park Chateau Hotel, was located on a quiet street and a few short minutes from all that Recoleta had to offer.
