Earth Hour 2009

Earth Hour 2009

Earth Hour 2009

Today between the hour of 8:30pm – 9:30pm (local time) several cities across the world, with the help of businesses and individuals, will switch off their lights in support against global warming.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

I will be spending Earth Hour away from home and with some friends as we toast and give our vote for Earth!

VOTE EARTH

I will admit I’m not the best person when it comes to recycling, composting, etc, but I do what I can do and every little bit helps. I hope this will inspire me to continue to conserve and reduce my carbon foot print on the world.

I leave you with this inspirational video on what we can do when we all unite for one cause!

Rodney’s Oyster House Restaurant Review

IMG_0089

This past birthday Russ had asked where I wanted to go for dinner. As we had previously gone to Rodney’s Oyster House in Yaletown before, I decided to go there and have some fish for dinner.

When I arrived from work that day, the dinner almost didn’t happen. Russ had told me that when he called to reserve a table, he was greeted by a very rude person who told him that we had to be out by 8:30pm. I was tempted to cancel the whole thing as I thought that was very rude coming from a staffer, but we went anyways. We arrived at the restaurant just before our 6:30pm reservation only to find out that our table wasn’t reserved for that day, but for the next day. We were both a little shocked, but then one of the hostesses quickly erased our name from our next day’s reservation and quickly sat us down to a table. There was no hesitation on her part and we were both impressed by that.

From the moment you walk into the restaurant you feel as if you have been transported to a restaurant on the eastern shore. The restaurant resembles a fish shack with many sea and ship items as decoration. Tables ranged from the standard tables, to bar style tables and eating area around the bar itself.

The menu is fairly simple (sorry the link is for their Toronto location) with mainly fish dishes for both appetizers and main courses, as well as their name sake – oysters.  As this was a celebration of sorts, Russ and I ordered oysters as appetizers. The oysters were awesome and you have choice of sauces to try with them which made them even more tasty. I also ordered a Manhattan Clam Chowder, which I was a little disappointed with as it was a tomato base and I felt I was eating a minestrone soup instead.

For our main course Russ ordered the Shrimp in Coconut & Curry and I ordered the Pasta with Scallops. Both were utterly outstanding. I couldn’t get over the size of the scallops in the pasta and the flavour the shrimp with coconut and curry was.

Overall the experience was very pleasant, the staff was very educated, and we were treated fantastic – minus the reservation screw-up.

I highly recommend you check them out as I’m sure you will be greatly surprised!

Happy Birthday Samantha

Samantha Brum The birthday month continues, but this time I want to wish my neice Samantha a wonderful and fantastic 17th Birthday. (YIKES, 17, they grow up so quickly).

Hello Big 4-0!

Today is my 40th Birthday!

Yes I know it is hard to believe, but 40 years ago today I was popped out of my mother’s womb and began my life as a breathing human being!

I myself find it hard that I just turned 40. I don’t feel it in the least. I feel like I’m still in my 30’s and I’m enjoying what life has thrown at me over the years.

There has been some great moments in my life that I do remember.

  • I remember my father teaching me to ride a bicycle.
  • I remember when I turned 5 years old and eating so much cake that I ended up in the hospital and for many years afterwards I never had any birthday cake, whether they be my own or at friends parties.
  • I remember that when I turned 9 years old, was the last time I really the last time my parents gave me a party with friends. I recall inviting some people specifically to that party as I knew they would give some cool gifts, especially Grant who gave me some cool Star Wars toys (selfish I know).
  • I recall becoming an Uncle for the very first time with the birth of my niece Amanda. This was followed by the birth of Adrian, Samantha, Justin and Stephen in later years (love you all VERY much)
  • I recall the day we got our first dog Kelly in Canada (alas she was lost a few months afterwards) only to get Princess who lived for 12 years with us.
  • I recall my first ski lesson in Ontario (hell I haven’t really skied since).
  • I recall grade 7 and attending my first after school dance and kissing Betty.
  • I recall attending High School in the 80’s and having my wonderful mullet haircut (glad I don’t have any photos to prove that one).
  • I recall our move to Woodbridge Ontario from Mississauga Ontario.
  • I recall learning to drive standard and then getting my drivers licence.
  • I recall attending MacMaster University and attending the awesome Quad-Parties and getting so drunk that I had a hang-over for a week.
  • I recall driving home every weekend from Hamilton to Woodbridge with Joanna Romano and playing our mix tape and singing our lungs out
  • I recall purchasing my very first car a 1987 Nissan 200 SX
  • I recall my Faema Cafe days (you guys made me grow more than you can ever imagine)
  • I recall packing up my things from Woodbridge and moving to Vancouver and moving in with Russ
  • I recall purchasing my first condo and freaking out that I wouldn’t be able to manage it
  • I recall visiting Paris for the very first time
  • I recall getting very close to a pod of humpback whales in Puerto Vallarta Mexico
  • I recall getting Junior 2 years ago
  • I recall travelling through the Rocky Mountains and climbing on a glacier
  • I Recall going back to Argentina and seeing my family that I haven’t seen in over 20 years.
  • I recall meeting all my good friends in this city.

So what are the plans for today? Not sure. I think Russ will be taking me out to dinner and if anyone else wants to tag along I hope you can. I know we had initially planned to have a party on the weekend, but with lots of my friends attending the Opera for Blogger’s Night (which I wasn’t invited, but its ok, really it is..sniff, sniff), or busy with other plans, or not even in the city, we decided to postpone it. Granted I probably will be celebrating for the full year so you can all make it up to me :)

Thank you all for making my 40 years so memorable. I hope to create some great new memories in the coming months and years.

UPDATE: Someone sent me this lovely video telling me that Disney is expecting me :)

Another person sent me this lovely song

The Whacky Wednesday Frollies

Well today at work was dubbed “Whacky Wednesday”. Yes it was whacky indeed as we are going through an interesting campaign. We will be hosting  a Social Media Strategy webinar series coming up this month and continuing for four months. We of course are tasked with contacting as many clients as possible and to gain interest in the topic. I believe the series will be a great success, but as motivation for us I began to ramble on about “Whacky Wednesday” and waving my hands in the air and it reminded me of the Family Guy – Whaky Waving Inflatable Arm Men ad.

I thought it was funny and I wanted to share it with everyone.

Enjoy :)

In a Slump of Sorts

I don’t know what it is these past couple of days, but it feels like I’m falling into a small slump and I’m not sure why. And before you say it, no it is not because of my birthday coming up this week, I’m actually looking forward to it. I’ve been looking forward to it for a few months now and planning on celebrating the whole year.

I guess you can say that this whole economic slowdown is starting to affect me. I’m starting to see some good people loose their jobs and I feel for them. I know others have been looking drastically for employment as well and I should feel great that I still have a job and an income coming in. I’m trying to keep upbeat about the whole thing too as this can’t last forever. Work has been putting on more and more pressures these days to produce and maybe I’m feeling that I’m just not “into” it anymore and need to challenge myself more.  Could it be the routine is getting to me?

Am I the only one that is feeling alittle low these days? What are you doing to “snap” out of it.

Maybe when the weekend rolls around I will feel much better, or if that lottery win ever happens :) Oops see there I just smiled.
