Just wanted to give everyone a quick update from Las Vegas. the weather has been cold here with temperatures at freezing during the evening. I’ve had to wear my heavy winter jacket to keep me warm.
I haven’t gambled much here ($5) so far. I’m not a huge gambler to begin with and of course all the machines are just hungry for your money.
Food and items are not cheap. you would think during a recession restaurants would want your money and have a reasonable menu, but alas that is not the case. I’ve been trying to keep my meal cost down, but let’s face it, it isn’t easy in Vegas.
Tonight Russ and I are headed to see Cher. this one of Russ’ icons and I thoght this woul be a great Christmas gift for him, since he bought the tickets to come down here.
I am surprised that nit many hotels here are decorated for Christmas. The only two hotels that have gone out of there way are Ceasar’s and The Ballagio. I’ll have to upload photos when I get back home.
Well time to back to some shopping as there are some great deals on clothing to be had here.
Dec 2nd
I was hoping to take my holidays and head back home for Christmas this year, but alas due to airline regulations (on both Air Canada and WestJet), I couldn’t bring Junior along for the trip (9″ or 8.5″ tall?? – come on) and the Rex Dog Hotel was fully booked during the holidays. As a result we decided to just stay here for Christmas.
Russ was going to buy my ticket back home to Toronto for Christmas, but since we weren’t going and the month of November was horrible for sunshine, we’ve decided to head down to Las Vegas for a few days next week just to get some sunshine. Yes I understand that the weather in Las Vegas this time of year isn’t “hot” or “warm”, it still will be warmer than here. Yes I understand that this week we are actually getting some sunshine in Vancouver, it will still be nice to get away. I haven’t been away from Vancouver since January of this year when Russ and I headed to Buenos Aires for 2 weeks.
This time around we are not staying in a “fancy” hotel. We are going to stay at Bally’s as it offered the cheapest rates. Yeah I understand it isn’t the greatest hotel on the strip, but let’s face it we are only there to sleep and the rest of the time will be outside exploring what Las Vegas has to offer.
As I’m not a gambler, I’m hoping to get Hoover Dam this time and maybe catch a couple of shows. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. I’m also hoping to take my photo walk knowledge down to Las Vegas and take some great night time shots.
So Las Vegas, hopefully you will welcome us and treat us well again!

After all that has happened over the past 2 weeks on both the personal home front and at work, I needed to break free from one of them and just concentrate on me. As a result I decided to take this week off work. I’m not planning on going anywhere as I normally do when I take a week off work, but this time I’ll be hanging around the city and just chillaxing as much as possible.
To help with that, I decided that I would disconnect from work completely. I normally would check work emails from time to time, but I thought that this time around I would completely disconnect. That is right I disconnected my work emails from coming to iPhone. I wanted the temptation to be gone. I also made a mental note that should anyone call me from work, I would ignore my work number. I think that my co-workers can handle the week without me.
Granted I’m not disconnecting from the interweb as others might do when they take vacation time, but I wanted to completely get away from work and anything related to work. I want to be fully recharged when I get back after the labour day long-weekend.
I hope to catch up on some summer movies that I missed as well as get out and meet with some friends from time to time. Hell I might even go on my own photo walk. Who knows you might even see some more blog posts as well.

Buenos Aires, like many major cities worldwide, is divided up into many neighbourhoods or “barrios”. On our recent trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Russ and I got to explore some of these neighbourhoods and I will create a short series on them.
Recoleta is known for its expensive shops, cafes and parks and the famous Recoleta Cemetery, where several famous Argentine’s are buried, including Evita Peron. The cemetery centres infront of a square where many local restaurants and night clubs are situated. The cemetery “was designed by Prospero Catelin of France, following a proposal by Bernardino Rivadavia, and opened in 1822 as a public cemetery for ordinary citizens.” [wiki]
Recoleta is also known as one of the most expensive neighbourhoods to live in, with the cost of real-estate, pricey restaurants and fashion designer adding to the cost of living. This is also the neighbourhood where I was born. Alas I can’t recall the name of the hospital my mother told me I was born in.
As most neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, Recoleta’s streets are lined with trees and every few blocks you are greeted with a park with huge full grown trees and you are always treated to a sculpture of some sort. One of the most famous sculptures is the Floralis Genérica, located in United Nations Park in Recoleta. This was created by Eduardo Catalano and is a metallic flower who’s petals open and close based on the incidence of solar rays.
The buildings rage from french style in architecture to more modern buildings.
We were lucky to have this as our base camp when we were in the city. Our hotel, Park Chateau Hotel, was located on a quiet street and a few short minutes from all that Recoleta had to offer.

Yesterday Russ and I arrived back from our trip to Argentina (A 20 plus hour plane ride).
I know I have lacked in blogging about my excursions of the Capital City – Buenos Aires. The internet connection was way too slow and I had trouble even uploading my photos up. I promise I will blog about the different areas of the city we explored in the coming days, but you can experience the photos on my Flickr page.
We both had a fantastic time in Argentina. Russ got to know my family alot more, and got to experience what has made my family truly amazing!
This was a trip for me to reconnect with my roots, to visit family I haven’t seen in so long, and restore those ties. This was also a trip for me to experience Argentina as an adult, to get out and enjoy what the city has to offer.
Buenos Aires is a huge city and is truly diversified from it’s European charm, to it’s modern elements. It was so nice to see a huge city like this have many parks spreed out through it. Each park also had statues and other pieces of art for all to enjoy. Buenos Aires is truly the Paris of South America.
I will miss Buenos Aires, and I look forward to experiencing the city again in a few years.

There is just something to say about family. This trip has been a great way to connect back with them and get to know them all over again.
On our last day in Ramallo, we spent lunch with my Aunt Carmen and her family. They set up their garage with tables, and had the paralla all ready when we arrived with 8 chickens cooking nicely.
We sat around the table and enjoyed the great company while at the sametime Russ practiced his spanish with my family. I think Russ was enjoying the meal so much that he said “Oh My God” alot and it quickly got caught on by the members of my family who kept repeating it and laughing everytime they said it.
After lunch, Russ and I started to explore my Aunt’s surrounding neighbourhood and my father suggested we walk a few blocks and explore the farm where he had been raised when in Ramallo. He had never told me this before and I had never asked before, but the history of our family is so strongly rooted in Ramallo, Argentina.
Later on that afternoon, my father headed down to get the lamb he had ordered for the big dinner that was planned that night. There was some confusion as to where the dinner would be held. Initially we had planned to have it near the river on the beach, but alas with the wind and the cooler weather we ended up renting a club house close to my Aunt Carmen’s house instead which proved to be a better choice in the long run.
As we watched my father and uncle prepare the feast, we all began to play games outside the club and I connect strongly with my cousins again and their children. Russ was having a blast and it should as his spanish kept improving slowly. I at one point was taken back by all the requests from family members to ask Russ stuff, but took it all in stride.
I am not one to eat lamb, never really liked it, but the way my uncle and father prepared the fresh lamb was unbeatable. The flavour of it, the tenderence of the meat were amazing. There wasn’t a single piece of lamb left that night. A truly amazing way to spend our last night in Ramallo.
The next morning we picked up my Aunt Nelly from my uncle’s farm and headed back into Buenos Aires where Russ and I had planned to spend the rest of the week downtown exploring what the city has to offer.

It has been a few days since I was last able to update this blog, this is mainly due to not finding many WiFi areas around here in Argentina. I apologies if this is too “diary” in format, but I think it’s important for me to remember and recall.
We had an interesting trip back to Buenos Aires from Mar Del Plata. We encountered a huge rain storm that lasted about 45 minutes. The rain was coming down so hard that alot of cars and trucks were pulling to the side of the street and waiting out the storm. Our driver on the other hand continued driving through it and I have to say drove amazingly safe. My aunt Nelly, was white knuckled during the storm and was worried.
We arrived fairly late to my aunt Tita’s house and you could notice the change in climate BA. It was 37C that night and my aunt’s place was so hot that it made it difficult to sleep that night.
The next day Russ and I joined my father and headed downtown to a car rental agency to rent a car for the weekend for our trek to Ramallo.
It was interesting taking the bus to downtown from my aunts place. I truly forgot how big BA is. The city is HUGE and I’m looking forward to spending a few days in the downtown core.
After the car rental, we picked up my mother and headed off to Ramallo. Ramallo is about 2.5 hours north of BA and the drive was interesting with little traffic.
We arrived at my parent’s apartment and unloaded our luggage and washed out clothes (which needed to be washed).
Ramallo is a fairly small town and it has been over 24 years since I last was here. We walked around the main boulevard for a bit and then headed off to my uncle’s farm for the evening and as customary with my family, you are made to eat when visiting. My uncle had made some asado, and we enjoyed eating it as usual. I was surprised that there was no mosquitoes at his place. I recall being eaten alive while there. I think that due to the drought they are having here, it has reduced the mosquito population drastically.
Yesterday we had gone around the town again and my father has planned a big get together for Sunday. We had gone to a farm where my father has asked for a lamb for dinner (mmm fresh meat).
When we arrived back to my parents place, my cousin’s daughter was there visiting with my mother and later my aunt Carmen dropped by so we could head to the cemetery to visit some relatives there, including my recently deceased uncle. I was amazed how the cemetery has grown through time. My father and mother highlighted some places where my relatives were buried, including my great grandparents, my grandparents, and my brother. I had taken a few photos of their grave stones to remember them.
I was surprised that when my aunt visited my uncle’s grave, she was able to remove the front plaque and actually see the coffin inside. It was alittle shocking at first, but at the same time, not so shocking to see.
This trip has been filled with family and my way of connecting back with them. This is my heritage, this is my past and I wanted to connect with it again and feel grounded. This is what has made me the person that I am, my family, my linage.

This day was another day of exploration.
Granted we had to buy our return ticket back to Buenos Aires for Thursday, we all grabbed a cab and headed down to the bus terminal to purchase our tickets.
From there we walked around the neighbourhood, exploring more of the shops and ended up walking towards the beach at the other end of the main beach. We all (my mother, aunt Nelly, Russ and I) sat and enjoyed the day as we all took a short break from walking. We then grabbed a cab back to the apartment and had our lunch.
Russ and I then decided to head back to the bus terminal and do alittle bit more exploring and hook up with a internet cafe so I could try to upload my photos to Flickr. I say “try” as the internet here is very slow and it took us over 1.5 hours just to upload 25 photos. I gave up after that and we continued to walk. We walked for several blocks, pass the main plaza, pass the casino and to a pedestrian street called “San Martin” which is full of shops, cafes, and other nicknacks for several blocks.
We continued up the street and reached a huge plaza where there was a Cathedral Church where people where gathered and protesting something. I wasn´t sure what they were protesting at the time.
After a walk around the plaza (park), we walked back to the apartment and rested abit as our walk was about 5 hours long.
Later the whole gang went to another Asado restaurant, where we enjoyed a great dinner.
My Father, Russ and myself then headed to the Casino for a “guys night out” and tried out luck at the Roulette tables. I was, or at least I shouldn´t have been, but Russ won on his first try at the Roulette tables. I sadly lost my 40 pesos very quickly! My father did have fun and we all arrived back at the apartment after 1am in the morning.
Tomorrow we have our last 1/2 day in Mar Del Plata and then head back to Buenos Aires on the bus and hopefully we´ll see some great places along the way that we didn´t get to see when we first drove down.

We had a fantastic rest last night. I can’t believe I was finally able to sleep.
We had a late start to the day as we didn’t make it out until after 12 noon. We had decided today wouldn’t be a “beach day” but it would be a day where we would go out exploring the city and see what exciting things we could find. Russ, my mother and aunt all went out walking to one of the main avenues here in Mar Del Plata, but quickly learnt that most stores (even though its in a tourist area) close for the afternoon. Most wouldn’t open up until 4:30pm that afternoon.
We walked up to where we had dinner that night and picked up a couple of sandwiches and some churos and ate at the park while we watched some kids play on the merry-go-round. It seems that most plazas (parks) have a merry-go-round for the kids to go on. Granted I’m not a kid anymore I don’t think I would have said no if my mother asked if I wanted to go on one
From there we took the bus (you can buy a card and put any amount of money on it and use it on any of the buses) and went down to the main Casino on the beach. As usualy Russ won on the slot machines, while my aunt and I walked around. My mother had fun playing on the slots as well, but was asked by one of my other aunts to play roulette for her. I have never played roulette nor had my mother so were not versed in the proper way of betting. For a casino, there were tons of roulette tables around. I think the only odd thing was to see 3 Blackjack tables and that was it for this casino. Granted we were there during the day, it did seem alittle odd to only have 3 open. Also it was fairly quiet for the casino.
We later then walked out to the front courtyard and sat and took a few more pictures of the beach and area.
We got home later and rested for abit and then went out to have some dinner at an Italian restaurant that wasn’t the greatest I have to admit.
Overall the day was fairly quiet and nothing more was done.
We are planning on only being here until Thursday when we will head to Ramallo for a few days until we make it back down to Buenos Aires to stay for the remaining time.
WiFi has been hard to find and the connection when found is VERY slow to say the least thus, it has taken sometime to get my photos uploaded for everyone to see.

Finally in Argentina and even though my right hear still hasn’t popped from the pressure of the plane, I’m still enjoying the vacation so far.
When we landed in Buenos Aires, we had hoped that my father would be waiting for us to drive us to my aunt’s home, but alas that wasn’t the case. Instead my mother paid for our ride into the city via a “Reme” (a combination of taxi and private chauffeur).
At my aunts house we were greeted by my father and his two sisters (my tia Tita and tia Nelly). These two sisters are very inseparable and always fun to see. I quickly got myself settled and took my long awaited shower (after 20 hours of flight it’s time to have a routine again).
Russ and I began to explore the neighbourhood a bit and walked around. This area alas has begun to get a bad reputation as being a harsh neighbourhood, but at the sametime people take pride in their homes and it shows. Homes are all gated, but they decorate them with a passion that I have not seen in sometime. Some homes have a front yard where they have manacured lawns, have flowers and some banana palms. Also the homes always have a centre court yard where most of the family usually gets together and is the heart of the home.
We didn’t stay much at my aunts home as my father later got us tickets on a bus to Mar Del Plata (a beach resort town just south of Buenos Aires). The bus was a double decker and we had to be at the bus terminal before 1am where the bus was leaving. When we arrived at the bus terminal I was shocked at the amount of people that were there at that hour of the morning and the amount of buses that where heading down to Mar Del Plata. I didn’t sleep very well that trip down on the bus. My chair would not recline properly and there were times on the route where I felt the bus was going to tip over. My father later let me know that they have been known to tip over (thanks Dad!)
We finally arrived in Mar Del Plata at 6:30am and we got to our appartment shortly after that. As not one of us had eaten, we all went out for breakfast. Argentinian’s are not very big on breakfast as it usually consists of coffee and pasteries.
After breakfast we walked around a bit to get orientated and discovered that the beach is only a few short blocks from the apartment. The beach we were on is known at the most popular beach on Mar Del Plata known as Perla Norte. They have areas broken down where you can rent a cabana, rent a table with umbrella and a public area which is a free for all. The cost to rent a cabana is $100 pesos ($33 US), a table and umbrella is $90 pesos ($30US). Since we wanted to have a secure place on the beach we rented the umbrella and table for the day.
We spent time on the beach and just relaxed. It was interesting to see that most Argentinians don’t head to the beach until after 12 noon and the beach becomes fully packed around 3pm that day. As this is prime holiday season here, the beaches really fill up.
Later that evening we went out for an authentic Argentinian bbq dinner (or parilla). We ordered the dinner for 5 which consisted of several different cuts of beet, chicken and pork that were brought to our table. A truly amazing tasty treat that we could not fully finish. We walked around the town, which now could be called a city as amount of people and the streets are bussling all the time.
As we are here roughly until the 16th I plan on exploring more of the city and not just spending time on the beach
The only problem that we are finding is that WiFi is very hard to find around here. We did manage to find a restaurant that offers free WiFi and we might just end up going there more often
I have to say I am looking forward to a good nights sleep as I really haven’t had one since Friday night.
