5 Things You Never Knew About Your Cell Phone

Today I received an email from a friend of mine with the following information regarding your cell phone and things you might not know.

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car, purse, and wallet. Good information to have with you.) There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST

Emergency

The emergency number worldwide for mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to
establish the emergency number for you, and int erestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at
home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the
mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other ‘remote’ for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor’s Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!’

THIRD

Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get
charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

FOURTH

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone: *#06#. A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won’t get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can’t use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally….

FIFTH

Free Directory Service for Cells

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don’t have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800)FREE411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.

This should be interesting to test out.

10 Things I Don’t Like About my Sony Ericsson W580i

The other day I posted 10 things I like about my Sony Ericsson W580i cell phone, today I will write about 10 things I don’t necessarily like about it (in no particular order)

  1. No flash with the camera – ok you have a “night time” mood, but you still need a burst of light I feel on those dark nights and the images in night mood are very pix-elated
  2. 2 mega-pixel camera – ok I said I liked this (better than my 1.3 from my previous phone), but with phones now-a-days I would have expected at least a 3 mega-pixel camera
  3. Rogers media player – now why would I use this when I have the Sony walk-man already on the phone?
  4. You can’t zoom when taking photos even though it’s suppose to have 3x optical zoom, you can zoom when you are taking a video
  5. Calendar doesn’t display all day events, ie Birthdays.
  6. I can’t change what is on my quick main menu buttons.  I have “Calls” and “Music”.  I would rather have “Contacts” instead of the Rogers Music
  7. Keys are alittle small and with my big fingers I have to really look at them to make sure I’m pressing the right buttons
  8. You can’t send a text message to someones email in you contact without setting up an email account first (Telus you were able to send a text message without any problems)
  9. Work address appear first before Home address in the Contacts
  10. It runs on the EDGE network and is not 3G compatible

I’m sure there are more but there is some for now :)

10 Things I like About my Sony Ericsson W580i

So I’ve had a couple of weeks to play with the new toy and here is what I’m finding I like most about it (in no particular order).

    1. Bluetooth – works great for sending files to my computer or any other bluetooth enabled product (like my digital photo frame at work)
    2. Calendar syncing – I can sync this up via bluetooth or USB
    3. Contact syncing – I can sync this up via bluetooth or USB
    4. Sony walk-man player – just works fantastic and you can actually shake your phone to shuffle music
    5. Built in step counter – good for seeing how much I actually walk per day
    6. 2 mega-pixel Camera – great pictures and some cool fun options too including frames
    7. Over a minute for video (love this)
    8. Icons are easily understandable
    9. Speaker phone – for those days where you just don’t want to hold the phone up to your ear
    10. Photo editing software built in

All in all I’m having a good time with the phone.

The Rogers Switch … So Far

So it has been about 2 weeks now that I have switched over to Rogers from Telus. I have to say the process was very easy and luckily now I can keep my same cell phone number.

I was told by the Rogers rep that someone from Rogers would be calling me in a weeks time to follow up on the activation and process. I have to admit I was looking forward to getting that call, but alas no one has called me yet. On top of this, I was actually expecting Telus to follow up with me as well to see why I had switched; they haven’t called me either. I’m starting to feel like I wasn’t important enough for either of them.

I did receive my bills from both this past week and I have a full month to pay on both. How does that work I wonder? Am I paying one month ahead for Rogers and one month behind for Telus? I am finding it hard to get through my Rogers invoice. I guess after 7 years with Telus I’ve become accustom to their invoices and I should get use to their invoice soon. I also did register on-line to view my invoices, but I have yet to see my current invoice on-line (though I can see my current balance).

    Oh well time will tell.

    The Cellphone Company Switch

Well I did it.  Yesterday I took the plunge and changed my cellphone company from Telus to Rogers.  I’ve been thinking of switching from sometime (read my to Blackberry or not to Blacberry post) and after much thought I did.  Now to my surprise I’m on even better plan than I was with Telus.  For roughly the same price (maybe $5 more) I’m actually getting weeknight and weekends for free! WOOHOO!

I did get the Sony Ericsson w580i which is a cool phone, but alas it doesn’t sync with my MacBook Pro.  This even after the sales person said it would sync with my calender.  What I will say it does, via the bluetooth and USB cables, is allows me to access files from my phone.  Now I hope Apple will include this phone in their iSync since they include many other Sony Ericsson phones.

At any rate this will set me up for when the iPhone officially launches in Canada, but I might have to wait until their lawsuit is finished.  Which might be a good thing as we’ll have a second generation phone.
