Last Day of MOvember

Sad, but true, today is the last day of Movember. Interestingly enough it ends on a MO-nday

That’s right folks for all of you that have been squeamish about the furry lip faces walking around the city can begin to rejoice! But let us not all rejoice just yet. If you haven’t donated yet to this cause, please do so now. All proceeds that are raised during this long month fundraiser will go to Prostate Cancer Canada.

I’ve been proud to participate in this event and proud to show off my MO’s progress this past month. I’ll be sad to see it go, but before everyone rejoices that I will no longer have the MO, I will again grow my goatee :)

I like to personally thank everyone that has donated to me. Without your help our Twi’stache Vancouver team would not have been as successful.

The MO – 27 Days Later

Mo - Day 27 Yes folks, the MO is now 27 days old. 27 days of growing facial hair from scratch (ignore the fact that I had a goatee and shaved it all off).

This has been an amazing month of Movember. I’ve had so much fun participating in this great cause to raise awareness for men’s prostate cancer.

Alas last night I couldn’t attend the Movember Gala party at Fortune Sound Club since my back gave out earlier in the day and I couldn’t handle much of the pain. I was paying attention online and watching the Twitter stream come in from fellow Mo Bro’s that were in attendance. I was so surprised when John Biehler dropped by the event with a donation cheque of $5,000 courtesy of his LG Charity win from earlier that evening.

The Twi’stache Vancouver Movember team is greatly appreciative of him for thinking of us. LG we thank you as well for giving the money to a great cause, you truly are living up to “Life’s Good” motto!

It’s still not too late to donate to our cause and all donations go to Prostate Cancer Canada.

Movember – Final Week

As the new Michael Jackson movie states, This Is It. This is the final week of Movember. This is the last week where men from around the world all joined together and grew mustaches (or mo’s as it is know in Australia where the Movember cause originated back in 2003). Globally Canada ranks second next to Australia on the donation scale where we have raised over $4.2 million so far.

I’d like to personally thank all those who have donated to me so far, so if you haven’t please do so today. All the proceeds of this lovely MO are going to Prostate Cancer Canada.

Some short facts about prostate cancer:

  • 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year alone (2009).
  • 4,400 men will die of the disease this year.*
  • During his lifetime, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with the disease.
  • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men.
  • Rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to rates of breast cancer in women.
  • The incidence of prostate cancer is increasing due to the aging of the population.
  • Over 90% of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages.
  • The disease is a far greater threat for those with a family history of prostate cancer.
  • Prostate cancer is turning up in men in their 40s.
  • Prostate cancer develops as a result of dietary, environmental and heredity factors but more research is needed to identify its causes and prevent the disease.
  • The disease has no symptoms in its earliest, most curable stage – so if you are 40 years old, we recommend you talk to your doctor about a prostate examination, including a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test.
  • Side effects – even of successful treatment – may include incontinence, impotence and changes in bowel habits.
  • Prostate cancer is often slow growing: in some patients, close monitoring may be sufficient treatment. Others, with more aggressive disease, warrant radical treatment with surgery or radiation. The latter treatments are sometimes combined with hormonal therapy.
  • Thought to be a potentially preventable cancer in many cases, but more research is needed and government support for this research is inadequate.

I’ll leave you with an awesome video written by Tanya Roberts of Bluefinch Creative and produced by Greg Meeres of Boldfish Video Production on the Movember cause!

EDIT: A good friend Tris Hussey is auctioning off dress rehearsal tickets to the Vancouver Opera’s Norma before Blogger Night this Saturday. Please leave a comment on his blog and he’ll donate 100% to one of us Movember players.  Happy bidding.

Movember – Day 11 of the MO

It’s hard to believe that 11 days ago I shaved off my goatee and became clean shaven after 15 plus years of having a goatee. Of course that didn’t last for long as that was the first day of my 30 day journey of growing a mustache or “MO” all in support of Movember, a charity drive to raise awareness for men’s prostate cancer.

I think my MO is coming in nicely and I’m getting excited to seeing the end result on the 30th of this month.

You can still help by donating to my Movember cause. As the video states, every bit helps. Think about doing without that latte today and donate. Maybe I should offer the highest bidder to shave off my MO at the end of the 30 days or have them decided if I should keep it or not? At any rate, if you don’t donate,  you won’t get a chance to decide.

Twestival Vancouver Tickets Now On Sale

Twestival Local

Hey folks, Rebecca Bollwitt (of Miss604 fame) has been organizing Twestival Vancouver and has let everyone know that the tickets are now on sale. Tickets are only $20 each and all proceeds will go to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

This year the event will take place at Ceilis Irish Pub (rooftop) on September 12, 2009 between 4 – 7pm.

This is a great event that is sure to have some great silent auctions and raise lots of money for the hospital.

This past February Twestival Vancouver raised $4000 for CharityWater. I missed that one, but won’t be missing this one.

Hope to see everyone out there for this great cause and hat’s off to Rebecca and all the sponsors for helping out!

Blogathon 2009 Edition

In just about 24 hours from now, starting at 6am July 25, several bloggers from around the world will participating in Blogathon where they will create one unique blog post every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Why are these bloggers doing this? Well they are raising money for their favourite charity.

A few bloggers from Vancouver and surrounding areas, with Rebecca leading the charge, will be blogging all day. Each of the Vancouver bloggers have their own charity they are supporting and I have highlighted some below.

I hope I didn’t miss anyone.

Jennifer from WorldWideWaterCooler will be coming up with Tanya, Russ and myself on Saturday for Chill on The Hill and she will be live blogging during her visit and stay up there. We will all be helping and supporting her on her quest.

I had thought of doing this myself this year, but alas I don’t think I have 49 blog posts in me. I will be helping Raul out by doing one guest post for him so stay tuned and check out his blog during the marathon event.

A lot of the bloggers will be at Workspace and you can help them out by either giving them food support or donating for their individual cause.

I wish all the bloggers the best during the 24 hour journey. You are all fantastic and doing some great things for great charities.

Vancouver Canary Derby

Last night when I was attending the BCTIA’s IMPACT Speaker series, they were promoting the 1st Annual Vancouver Canary Derby.

On September 21st Tech Companies will “Race to the Steamclock” in Gastown to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Vancouver technology companies are being challenged to design and build soap box cars that will be raced by CEOs to raise money for the Canary Foundation, an organization dedicated to funding early cancer detection and intervention.

Participating teams can be found here and you can donate to the BC Cancer Foundation here.

Time trials begin at 9am with qualifying races starting at 11am.  The final heat will start at 2pm.  Sounds like it will be a fun event.

Vancouver Charity Round Up

These past couple of months I saw a few of my fellow bloggers join together to help support charity.  Many participated in the Blogathon, where they posted 1 blog post per 1/2 hour for 24 hours (a truly amazing task).  Even though I didn’t participate I did contribute to a few of the causes out there.

Recently my friend Raul has posted a recap of some of the people that are still participating in some charity event and using the blogosphere to get their message out and help raise some funds.

I thought I would highlight some:

Tanya Davis has joined Buzz Bishop’s 95 Crave Team Diabetes.  You can read her post here and her donation page is here. (I have supported both as I recently lost an Uncle to diabetes).

British Columbia SPCA has a Paws for a Cause walk coming up on September 14th.  As I feel that I’m too late to really campaign myself for this event, I thought I would spread the word.  I’m sure next year I will participate with Junior.  If you can’t participate, but wish to donate, you can do so here.  (Note the website seems not to work on FireFox 3 for some reason).

The Terry Fox Run will also take place on September 14th with locations across Canada.  You can find the BC locations here.

The Scotiabank AIDS Walk takes place a week later on September 21st in Vancouver.  You can sign up here.

UPDATE:

The Dr. Peter Centre is also having a charity event coming up on September 14th called Passions to support the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.

Chefs from 18 of Vancouver’s best restaurants will vie for your tastebuds attention.

If anyone else has some charity events they would like me to post, please comment below or send me an email.

Blogathon Begins Today

There are a few bloggers in Vancouver participating this weekend in the Vancouver Blogathon. What is the Blogathon? Bloggers are encouraged to sign up for a charity and blog every 30 minutes for 24 hours straight. You can see more information at their wiki site.

I alas will not be one of the participants as I honestly don’t feel I could do it non-stop for 24 hours. I give great shut outs to the participants I know – Rebecca, Raul, Jenn and Nadia and Duane. You all are amazing for doing this and I’ll try to support anyone I can during the 24 hours.

I’m happy to see that awareness will be brought to your charities and the what they support.

Good luck all!
